"Exegit monumentum aere perennius" translates from Latin to English, "I have erected a monument more lasting than bronze."
The great depression in America and its involvement in war during the 1920's were very influential and important historical events. The unemployment rate was at 5.2%, and many authors wrote of the struggles and monetary sufferings that most americans were experiencing during that time.
"An author ought to write for the youth of his generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward." I think that quote was meant to convey the purpose of authors and how they need to write to educate the upcoming generations, please the critics that will be analyzing their literature for years to come, and set an example for educators and writers of all generations.
